Nature Exploration
A deeper understanding of nature helps children see that they are part of a larger world.
Children today spend less time outside nature and more time indoors in front of screens. Providing opportunities for children to explore and discover the outside world supports the development of social skills, self-esteem and critical and creative thinking. When teachers consistently provide time in the natural world and bring nature back into the classroom, children appreciate the world around them and recognize and value their place in it.
Children at UPC Discovery enjoy a sizeable outdoor nature classroom with extensive green space. They also explore the 10 acres of woods and meadows of the church grounds with their teachers. United Presbyterian Church is an official National Wildlife Habitat and is home to many distinctive species of flowers and trees. In the spring, children can even see families of geese and ducks roost and may see the occasional deer or wild turkey.
